Week 7

Sounds c · u — and the first words she reads

Two more sounds that open up cat, cup, mug, sun, cot. Then the real test: reading a word she has never been shown.

The work

  1. Two new sounds

You need: A cup, an umbrella

Three-period lesson. /c/ and /k/ make the same sound — say so plainly, she can handle it. k comes later.

  2. Build, then read back

    You need: Moveable alphabet

cat, cup, mug, sun, cot, dig. She builds it, then runs a finger under it and says it. Building first, reading second.

  3. The secret message

    You need: Paper

Write a word and hand it over saying nothing: sit, tap, pat, run. If she reads it and does it, she is decoding. This is the real test and it is also the best game.

Every week, not just this one

Practical life

Making her own snack start to finish — get it, prepare it, eat it, wash up.

Her body

Balance bike, climbing, running on sand.

Optional — watch together

Ms Rachel visits the Play Street Museum Ms Rachel · 30:42

Optional. Entirely real world, real children, real place — the most level-appropriate thing on the channel.

Short and real. Talk about what the children in it were doing.

Week 7 · she spells it before she writes it

Building words

Say the word slowly, stretching every sound. She finds each letter and lays it in a box — left to right.

cat
cup
mug
sun

The faint word on the right is for you to check against, not for her to copy.

Week 7 · cut out

Reading cards

Cut along the dashed lines. Keep them in an envelope.

pin
pot
cup
mug
map
cat
dog
sun

No pictures on purpose — a picture lets her guess instead of read. Every word here is spellable from the twelve sounds she has met. Match each to the REAL object.

For whoever is at the table

Week 7 — Sounds c · u — and the first words she reads

Set out before she sits down

  • Two new sounds — A cup, an umbrella
  • Build, then read back — Moveable alphabet
  • The secret message — Paper

Every day, away from the table

  • A real job: Making her own snack start to finish — get it, prepare it, eat it, wash up.
  • Her body: Balance bike, climbing, running on sand.

How to run it

  • No pictures on the cards, ever. A picture turns reading into guessing.
  • Complete silence while she decodes, however long it takes.
  • Test with a word she has never seen. Practised words prove nothing.
  • If she reads a word, do not make a fuss — just hand her the next one. The work is the reward.
